Kunkka the Admiral is a versatile melee Hero. Though can work with any role, his build is completely dependent on which path he'll take, be it a carry or merely an initiator. He requires good positioning and reflexes in order to succeed. When played well, he can be an excellent hero on all fronts, from initiating to lane control. He can be fearsome and capable of dealing burst damage as well as survive any chaos and mayhem with the right use of his spells.

Kunkka is a hero that requires huge farming ability, extensive map awareness, and near-perfect positioning to be effective. Because of this, he is not recommended to new players. He is recommended for advanced players.

[edit] Bio

Kunkka Kunkka, the Admiral
"That's worth a bottle of rum."
Role: Disabler / Initiator / Carry / Durable
Lore: As Admiral of the mighty Claddish Navy, Kunkka was charged with protecting the isles of his homeland when the Demons of the Cataract made a concerted grab at the lands of men. After years of small sorties, and increasingly bold and devastating attacks, the Demon Fleet flung all its carnivorous ships at the Trembling Isle. Desperate, the Suicide-Mages of Cladd committed their ultimate rite, summoning a host of ancestral spirits to protect the fleet. Against the Demons, this was just barely enough to turn the tide. As Kunkka watched the Demons take his ships down one by one, he had the satisfaction of wearing away their fleet with his ancestral magic. But at the battle's peak, something in the clash of demons, men and atavistic spirits must have stirred a fourth power that had been slumbering in the depths. The waves rose up in towering spouts around the few remaining ships, and Maelraun the Tentacular appeared amid the fray. His tendrils wove among the ships, drawing demon and human craft together, churning the water and wind into a raging chaos. What happened in the crucible of that storm, none may truly say. The Cataract roars off into the void, deserted by its former denizens. Kunkka is now Admiral of but one ship, a ghostly rig which endlessly replays the final seconds of its destruction. Whether he died in that crash is anyone's guess. Not even Tidehunter, who summoned Maelraun, knows for sure.

[edit] Gameplay

Kunkka is most powerful because of his Tidebringer ability, which adds cleave to his basic attacks and increases damage. When used in lanes, this can quickly take out multiple creeps, or focus a ton of damage on a single one, for maximum farming and control potential. His other ability, Torrent, disables enemies for a short time, allowing him to gank and harass easily, as well as escape from a fight he has no chance of winning. X Marks the Spot allows him to improve the effectiveness of his Torrent ability, as well as gank and escape with practice. It pairs well with other spells and heroes, letting Kunkka snap an enemy back in place for a hard blow. His ultimate, Ghost Ship, reduces the damage taken by friendly heroes for a short time, and can stun enemies if aimed properly, making a great initiator for large and small battles.

[edit] Recommended Items

Explanation:

  • Starting Items: Provides a lot of healing and strength bonuses to keep Kunkka alive in the lane. Clarity also lets him be more aggressive with Torrents early on. Consumables can vary to provide more healing or stats.
  • Early Game: Boots of Speed give a much needed speed boost and build up into Power Treads later. Magic Stick for some in lane healing. Bracers and a Ring of Health to make Kunkka more resilient and to add to his mana pool.
  • Core: Power Treads make Kunkka a lot more powerful, letting him take and dish damage. Magic Wand for improved healing. Vanguard lets him shrug off damage, and Scrolls make him a lot more mobile.
  • Situational: Battle Fury improves Kunkka's Tidebringer and gives plenty of regeneration, and is very easy to build. Black King Bar will keep him alive in teamfights and isn't too expensive. Daedalus' critical strike will add extra damage to his Tidebringer and Battle Fury. Assault Cuirass reduces enemy armor, allowing you and your allies deal more damage, while giving an armor boost to them at the same time. Heart of Tarrasque provides a ton of extra health and regeneration, and helps Kunkka recover from fights almost immediately. Not mentioned in the recommended build but a very strong choice is Shadow Blade. Shadow Blade allows Kunkka to position himself better and the damage bonus applies to the cleave effect on Tidebringer, effectively dealing a bonus 150 pure damage to targets hit by the cleave.

[edit] Tips

  • Tidebringer is your signature ability, and should be trained early.
  • Use Torrent to initiate battles and disable opponents.
  • Try to get raw damage to maximize your Tidebringer damage.
  • X Marks the Spot works well with Torrent to ensure you a hit.
  • Ghost Ship delays half of the damage dealt to allies, making it great for short team battles.
  • Train Torrent first if you're going for First Blood, otherwise, train Tidebringer.
  • Try dual laning with heroes such as Crystal Maiden or Vengeful Spirit. Their disables will help you land your Torrents.
  • Avoid taking damage in team battles as much as possible, you don't have as much health as your allies!
  • Use a high leveled X Marks the Spot on enemies who are trying to flee using a Town Portal Scroll and they will be brought back to the X no matter how far they've gone!
  • The classical combo should be: Torrent and then Ghost Ship, but you can add X Marks the Spot before them if you are targeting a single unit.
  • During team fights, either initiate with your combo when the enemies get clumped together, or wait until the battle starts and use it when they get clumped.

[edit] Trivia

  • Kunkka's official alternate/fun names were "CoCo", "Daelin Proudmoore" and "Captain Obvious"
  • In his original biography it is stated that some people called him "Jack Sparrow" like the character from "Pirates of the Caribbean" but it was never seen as his name in game.
  • Kunkka is also the name of the artist who made the loading screen pictures for DotA 1.
