Mercurial the Spectre is a melee agility Hero that uses her abilities to confuse and hound the enemy, letting her allies take advantage of the confusion. While she may be a carry, her abilities make for excellent ganking set-ups, especially when her target is alone.

Beginners will enjoy Spectre as a hero to transition to a more difficult environment as she provides map control and good solo ability while not requiring extensive knowledge. She is recommended for new to intermediate players.

[edit] Bio

Spectre Mercurial, the Spectre
"Can no one understand me?"
Role: Carry / Durable
Lore: Just as higher states of energy seek a lower level, the Spectre known as Mercurial is a being of intense and violent energy who finds herself irresistibly drawn to scenes of strife as they unfold in the physical world. While her normal spectral state transcends sensory limitations, each time she takes on a physical manifestation, she is stricken by a loss of self--though not of purpose. In the clash of combat, her identity shatters and reconfigures, and she begins to regain awareness. She grasps that she is Mercurial the Spectre--and that all of her Haunts are but shadows of the one true Spectre. Focus comes in the struggle for survival; her true mind reasserts itself; until in the final moments of victory or defeat, she transcends matter and is restored once more to her eternal form.

[edit] Abilities

Spectral Dagger
Q
W
Spectral Dagger icon.png
Ability Type Targeting Type Allowed Targets
Active Point Ground / Enemy Unit
Spectre flings a dagger to draw a Shadow Path, dealing damage and slowing any enemies along the trail. Units hit by the dagger also trail a Shadow Path. While treading the path, Spectre phases through otherwise impassable terrain.
Range: 2000
Radius: 125
Path Duration: 12
Damage: 50/100/150/200
Movement Speed Increase/Slow: 5%/9%/14%/18%
Cooldown 16 Mana 130/140/150/160

Mercurial's dagger eclipses the physical plane in shadow, a state in which mortals cower, but spectres thrive.

Notes:

  • Spectre can move over cliffs, trees, buildings and units while under effect of this spell.
  • Debuff lasts for 7 seconds after enemy leaves shadow path.
  • Slows but does not damage magic immune units.
  • The dagger moves at a speed of 857.14 units per second.
  • Vision is granted of shadow path when Spectral dagger is cast.

Desolate
W
L
Desolate icon.png
Ability Type Targeting Type Allowed Targets
Passive N/A N/A
Deals bonus pure damage when Spectre attacks an enemy hero with no nearby allied units.
Damage Bonus: 20/30/40/50

Often times, warriors find themselves alone with a vision of Mercurial - the fated question is if it is the true Spectre.

Notes:

  • Damage is dealt before Spectre's actual attack.
  • Works only if attacked enemy has no allies in 325 range.
  • Your illusions also have the Desolate ability.

Dispersion
E
I
Dispersion icon.png
Ability Type Targeting Type Allowed Targets
Passive N/A Any unit
Damage done to Spectre is reflected on her enemies, leaving her unharmed. The effect lessens with distance.
Radius: 1000
Damage Reflected: 10%/14%/18%/22%

A daunting task lies before enemies of Mercurial - killing a shadow with blade and magic.

Notes:

  • Reflected damage is not felt by Spectre, effectively reducing the incoming damage.
  • Illusions will not benefit from this ability.
  • Full damage is dealt in a 300 radius around Spectre.
  • The damage dealt decreases linearly from a 300 distance to a 1000 distance from Spectre.

Haunt
R
T
Haunt icon.png
Ability Type Targeting Type Allowed Targets
Active Instant N/A
Creates a spectral nemesis to attack each enemy hero after a short delay. Haunts are uncontrollable, take extra damage, and deal less damage than Spectre herself. At any moment during the duration, Spectre can use Reality to take the place of a given illusion.
Haunt Duration: 5/6/7
Cooldown 120 Mana 150

At the height of combat, Mercurial's physical manifestation shatters, and the shadowy pieces haunt those who still cling to life.

Notes:

  • Illusions have Desolate ability with same level as Spectre's, and damage from Desolate on illusions isn't reduced.
  • Illusions are uncontrollable, and only attack their own pair of targets.
  • There is a 1 second delay before illusions start attacking the nearest hero.

Reality
D
R
Reality icon.png
Ability Type Targeting Type Allowed Targets
Active Instant N/A
Spectre physically possesses a chosen Haunt, giving it solid reality while the other images blink out of existence.

The scattered shadows unite into the one true Spectre.

[edit] Recommended Items

Explanation:
Spectre's strength lies in her ability to participate in teamfights from anywhere on the map using her ability Haunt. Her illusions created by Haunt receive Desolate. It is wise to get items that add additional passive abilities that are usable by illusions.

Diffusal Blade is the only Unique Attack Modifier that works on Spectre's illusions, as well as providing an agility bonus that will indirectly increase illusions' damage. Illusions will also benefit from Radiance's Burn Damage, Daedalus's critical strike, and Sange and Yasha's movement speed, attack speed, strength, and agility. Butterfly gives a lot of agility, but the evasion is a double-edged sword, since evaded damage will not trigger Dispersion. Heart of Tarrasque gives her a great deal of HP, which makes Dispersion more powerful.

Since Spectre's illusions are very powerful (due to Desolate and the passive abilities of the items she acquires), Manta Style can capitalize on this advantage by making even more illusions, as well as giving bonuses similar to those of Sange and Yasha.

[edit] Trivia

  • Spectre's alternate/fun name "Qwerty-" was given to spectre for remembering a Legendary Dota player Zaven "Qwerty" Terminasov, who passed away December 5, 2010.
  • Spectre's voice responses are overlayed with the same track playing backwards, a reference to the Avatar of Vengeance's voice in Warcraft III, and the voice of Spectre in Dota 1.
