Shendel the Vengeful Spirit is a ranged agility Hero excelling in ganks, disabling and kill hunts. Despite being a support, she is capable of acting as a semi- or even full carry owing to her huge base attack damage and her various abilities which enhance it. She has abilities that are very useful in ganks and surprise attacks. Vengeful Spirit is typically seen roaming the battlefield, searching for targets to prey on, hitting them with a powerful stun and reduce their armor making them more vulnerable and weakened. Her very presence empowers the attack of her allies and she can swap positions with others, sacrificing herself to save her ally or letting her allies take on their unfortunate victim, all for her need to exact vengeance.
Beginners will dislike this Hero very much, especially because her most important role is suicidal. And not only that, Vengeful Spirit is overly dependent with her timing, target priority, opponent logic, and game sense for her to be actually any use. She is recommended for intermediate to advanced players.

Even the most contented Skywrath is an ill-tempered creature, naturally inclined to seek revenge for the slightest insult. But Vengeful Spirit is the essence of vengeance. Once a proud and savage Skywrath scion, first in succession for the Ghastly Eyrie, a sister's treachery robbed her of her birthright. Snared in a hired assassin's net, she tore free only at the cost of her wings, limping away in the ultimate humiliation: On foot. With her wings shattered, she knew her people would never accept her as ruler; and in the high roost of the Skywrath flock, inaccessible except by winged flight, her sister was untouchable. Unwilling to live as a flightless cripple, and desiring revenge far more than earthly power, the fallen princess drove a bargain with the goddess Avilliva Scree'auk: She surrendered her broken body for an imperishable form of spirit energy, driven by vengeance, capable of doing great damage in the material plane. She may spend eternity flightless, but she will have her revenge.

Explanation:

- Under all circumstances max Magic Missile first.
- Besides being an effective disabler, she is a potent interrupter from Magic Missile and Nether Swap.
- Her Vengeance Aura boosts her own damage as well, so do not underestimate her autoattack.
- A ganking trick early-game is to Nether-Swap an enemy hero into a tower's range, then use Magic Missile to stun them. With the tower's help you should easily kill the hero.
- Venge is best chosen when you have very auto-attack reliant heroes like Ursa and Drow Ranger. She is also effective in helping spells that are hard to land, such as Lina's Light Strike Array.
- In large encounters your stun is best used on the enemy's support units, rather than their carries.
- Wave of Terror is an armour reduction spell with very little mana cost, and should be used in every encounter. It can be used to reveal the fog of war to scout out possible ambushes or to reveal an area for a Nether Swap.
- Nether Swap is useful in encounters to bring easily-killed enemy heroes into the range of your carries/gankers.
- Desolator should always be built, as its armour reduction stacks with Wave of Terror's; and the two together allow Venge to act as a semi-carry if she chooses.
- Vengeful spirit is an item-independent hero. That being said, she can be effective even with minimal items. She should constantly be ganking your opponents keeping enemy carries in check, warding and de-warding maps or assist in pushes. Reserve the farming for your carries.
- Nether Swap has multiple uses despite its simple mechanic. It allows vengeful to sacrifice herself for either an enemy key hero or to save an important ally from dying. Such act is sometimes essential to win a clash or perhaps even an entire game. One should not hesitate to sacrifice oneself in an encounter if it allows for one's team to get kills; Venge is not very reliant on items so it is best for her to die. One can reduce her death time with a Bloodstone if one so wishes.
- With good communication, Nether Swap allows you to escape death by swapping with an ally that has potent escape mechanism such as Queen of Pain's Blink without putting them in much danger.
- With Kunkka's X mark the spot on Vengeful, she can then swap her opponents while being returned back to her exact location afterwards, effectively saving her from imminent death.
- If being pursued by multiple heroes, Nether Swap can sometimes be used on the enemy hero most furthest from you, resulting in the pursuers to overshoot slightly due to a sudden change in direction, giving you extra time to escape in a different pathway though putting you in the opposite direction from your intended escape route.
[edit] Trivia
- Blink Dagger cannot be bought on Vengeful Spirit. If it could be, she would be able to blink to an enclosed area and then switch places with an enemy, leaving her foe potentially trapped.
- Previous designs of Vengeful Spirit showed her with a mask.
- Vengeful Spirit's fun name, "820", is given in respect of legendary DotA player 820.
